People of Bogawantalawa

Significant numbers of people employed in the tea area in Bogawantalawa are of Indian origin. Though they represent different religions they still live peacefully together in their daily life. Catholics, Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus work side by side – in the tea fields or at the factories – without disturbances. Religion will differ from one tea division to another; at one a majority of the inhabitants can be Catholics, whereas the adjoining can be entirely Hindu. However puzzling it may seem, their joint responsibility for the work with tea and perhaps also the calming nature, apparently have a uniting effect on the people. Religion is a natural part of life and their worship altars are always in reach – in the fields or by the roadside and a number of religious festivals will highlight and colour the life of the people in Bogawantalawa.
